JOE NOVAK

I have been primarily involved with painting throughout my career, which spans almost thirty years. My paintings, many of them on a large scale, are abstract excursions into color and light, with the works on canvas tending toward the monochromatic and incorporating tonal gradations that infuse them with a meditative quality.

The manner in which the paintings are illuminated is an integral element in the presentation of the work, resulting in glowing surfaces of color and light. Experimenting with changing light levels on the paintings, I have created programmed sequences of variable light movements and configurations, the effects of which extend the visual experience of painting to include the elements of time, movement and change.

During the late 1990s, a collaboration with architect Gil Beach led to the design of a prototype of a non-denominational meditation chapel incorporating a number of the large “meditation” paintings.

Since early 2000 until the present, I have continued to pursue my interest in color and light on a smaller scale, concentrating on drawings, monotypes, small paintings, assemblages, mixed media and prints. The goal here has been to achieve similar effects as the larger paintings. In print making, a variety of techniques has been employed, including intaglio and serigraphy, with a focus on multi-plate color aquatint etchings, in both editions and as monoprints.

My most recent major body of work, titled “Colors”, is a series of 350 paintings on panel, size 5”x 7”, completed during the 3 year period 2006-2008. These works are intended to be displayed either individually or in groupings.
