BEEJ NIERENGARTEN-SMITH

ARTIST STATEMENT

“My goal is to create something that no one has ever seen before.”

“Artists challenge us to see the world differently, reinterpreting the familiar and changing our perceptions of reality. I believe this with a personal iconography that is intimately connected to my travels, my passions, my cultural observations and social convictions. My intricate printmaking process combines old techniques and modern technology, resulting in one-of-a-kind images. Often created in thematic series, these images can be appreciated for the sensual appeal of their color and pattern and lyrical grace of their lines, but they are also suffused with layers of meaning that give them an intellectual richness.

My artistic life has always centered on people and their relationship to ideas that are meaningful in their lives. I search for cultural images from various geographic regions and distill selective images into layered expressions of visual emotion. Everyone has stories to tell: appropriated cultural images evoke emotions and restate their content in terms of the 21st century. I work on paper with printmaking as a basis, creating a unique succession of thoughts and expressions in a series that begins with a skeletal iconic image, and I build upon it until the visual narrative is complete. To some degree the centuries pass while geography and iconic images from culture to culture continue to speak to the viewer and art arranges our sense of appreciation.”
