RICHARD HOEY

“The present creates the future. And where we are now, is a result of the past.”

“I have worked to develop a distinctive style which is earthy, simple and unpretentious. Creating from natural materials presents a refreshing alternative to the world of fast living and instant access technology, drawing the viewer on a deeper, even spiritual level.”
-- Artist Richard Hoey, born Cheshire, England, 1968

Time forms the narrative of my work which has evolved through a process of creating physicality’s in which I involve myself and the viewer in something of a relationship between art and the often fragile emotional, mental and spiritual state. My sources of inspiration are varied and are derived from that which reflects spirituality and the psyche.

My works are carefully planned and at the same time exposed to chance. In many cases working on an absorbent ground of plaster, with oil washes of a reduced colour palate and through a process of layering I aim to give my work the feeling that it has formed itself, and undergone something brought about by natural changes. It is through this repeated building up and stripping back layers of paint and plaster, and my use of transparent washes of colour over areas of absorbent paint that I aim to create entities which absorb and compress time.

This I explore in my painting and sculpture using texture and colour as a means to convey an insight into the psyche and look deeper at our interconnectedness with one another and our environment. Through bringing my personal experiences into my work and focusing my attention on what it is I choose to reveal or conceal and what it is that leads me to repeatedly come back to these archetypal references and mandala-like elements.

Artist Richard Hoey has exhibited In London and extensively throughout the UK, where his work is in high demand. Following commissions in LA and NY, Richard had his first USA exhibition 2004.
