Sandro Chia (b. 1946 - ) was born in Florence. He studied art at the Istituto d’Arte and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, gaining his degree in 1969. During the 1970’s, Chia exhibited frequently in Rome and Europe, gradually transitioning from conceptual work toward a more figurative style of painting. Beginning in 1981, he moved to New York, where he remained for two decades, with frequent trips back to Italy. Chia has exhibited in many of the most important museums and galleries of the world, including the Biennale of Paris and San Paolo and numerous times at the Venice Biennale. Chia was part of the “Transavantgarde” movement, an expressionist resurgence that swept through Italy in the 1980’s. These artists rejected the tenants of conceptual art and attempted to bring emotion back into art, aiming to restore myth, mystery and magic to contemporary art. Today Chia lives between Miami, Rome and his wine-making estate in Montalcino, Italy.
